In 2016, the Hong Kong Government published the Hong Kong Poverty Situation Report on Ethnic Minorities. This report updated the major poverty statistics for ethnic minorities, while also analysing the impact of policy interventions.

Since then, there has been little follow-up work. To meet this need, The Zubin Foundation decided to host a conference to help key stakeholders understand the struggles and the potential of Hong Kong’s ethnic minorities. Audience members include Business Leaders, Social Workers, Community Advocates, Senior Government Officials, as well as practitioners from CSR, Human Resources, Talent Acquisition, Diversity & Inclusion Practitioners, and other NGOs.

Highlights of the conference include an insight into the past, present, and future of ethnic minorities in Hong Kong; breakout rooms to discuss key issues such as inclusive education, inclusive business, the role of women and girls, and the impact of mental health. The conference closes with an open discussion on the need for a change in the mindset of the majority population.

Preliminary Itinerary:

  • Welcome by Caspar Tsui, Secretary for Home Affairs
  • Panel Discussion on Past, Present, and Future of Hong Kong’s Ethnic Minorities
  • Morning breakout rooms on Inclusive Education and Inclusive Business
  • A lunch-time chat on religion and culture
  • Afternoon breakout rooms on Women and Girls, and Mental Health
  • Plenary discussion on Changing Mindsets of the Majority Population
  • Closing Thoughts and Observations

Date: Tuesday, 9 November 2021 Venue: Holiday Inn Golden Mile, Tsim Sha Tsui Time: 9.30am to 5.30pm

Sustainability Goals

At the conference, we would like to continue our sustainability practices to avoid wastage and harm to our environment. Here are some of the ways in which we are staying true to our goals.

Our commitment to the environment:

  • We are saying no to single use backdrops and will have very limited paper signages at the event.
  • We have said no to the hotel for notepads. We request all attendees to bring their own notebooks.
  • We have said no to plastic bottles of water.
  • We have requested limited glasses of water at the hotel, because we want to reduce the water needed to clean them. Please bring your refillable water beakers.

Our commitment to including women:

  • We are saying no to the ‘manel’ – the male-only panel.

Our commitment to multi-stakeholder engagement:

  • We would like to hear diverse voices – from NGOs, schools, companies, and individuals.  We have tried to include these varied voices.
